SMART-FI facilitates the use and sharing of open data in Smart Cities

Today, 54% of the world population lives in cities and by 2050, this figure is estimated to reach 66%. This will create a challenge for all of us but with the help of technology, living in cities can become more pleasant for its citizens. SMART-FI is a 1.5 M€ project that started in April 2016 and aims to provide a platform for service developers, municipalities and inhabitants who can benefit from smart cities open data. The SMART-FI approach is expected to help deploying and interconnecting services using real data from diverse sources, mainly public administrations, but also from other third-party services or devices. Remarkably, it will provide services on top of the FIWARE infrastructure, a standard open platform recognized at EU level, that facilitates the development of smart applications and with an environment where cities can publish their open data.

 

SMART-FI main goal is to create a platform to deploy and interoperate services by exploiting aggregated open data from smart cities. The project will provide methodologies to homogenize heterogeneous open data and data services, perform analysis and aggregation of data analytics services to predict patterns and make recommendations, as well as to facilitate services deployment.

 

This is the reason why in SMART-FI, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) supports the interaction between humans and devices in three consecutive activities: collecting, communicating and using information. First, the approach in SMART-FI is to collect information through fixed sensors, mobile devices or directly from services to capture data such as temperature, sound, location etc. Secondly, it communicates data using different networks. And finally, it interprets data to understand what has happened and what is likely to happen next, making predictions and recommendations. We will also present the data in a way that is understandable for those making decisions, such as authorities, citizens or other stakeholders, based on aggregated information.

 

Most people now use mobile phones, not only to make phone calls, but also to interact with the world they live in to plan, schedule and organize their lives; all this information is available right within the palm of a hand. Citizens would like to have accurate and real-time personalized solutions from information regarding immediate or even near-future traffic, mobility patterns or other services relevant for their daily life. Additionally, the SMART-FI solution aims at supporting local authorities, public transport operators and other organisations to optimize the services provided supporting the concept of a smart city.

The goal is also to apply standards as much as possible, and use common semantics to ensure that all open data used in applications can be reused easily in other places.

The SMART-FI platform will be used to develop services in three smart city scenarios: Malaga, Spain; Malatya, Turkey and Karlshamn, Sweden providing added-value future Internet innovative services.

The consortium is formed by ATOS Spain SA, NetPort Science Park, SAMPAS Bilisim ve Iletisim Sistemleri AS. Technische Universität Wien, University of Málaga and counts with the support of the cities: Municipality of Málaga, Municipality of Karlshamn and Malatya Metropolitan Municipality.

 

The project is funded within the ERA-Net Urban Europe Joint Programming Initiative with support from the funding agencies in each country: CDTI in Spain, FFG in Austria, Tübitak in Turkey and Energimyndigheten in Sweden.
